Hi, I’m Jess

CALL TO ACTION

Do you ever have the sense that things can get a little crazy sometimes? You have some idea what you want for your life and your family, but somehow in the day to day mayhem of trying to stay on top of work, keeping your family fed and dealing with the the never ending pile of laundry you wonder if this is what you signed up for.

All those plans and projects that you day dream about seem to get pushed into the background, your kids have ready made pizza just a bit more often than you'd like, and you always feel like its all about to fall apart. You find yourself in survival mode. I know how that feels! As a wife, a mom of two small, rambunctious boys (age 2 and 3 currently), and a therapist I know that sometimes things don’t go to plan. But I also know that by being a little intentional about defining whats important to us and aligning our habits with these values we can “live life as a work of art, rather than a chaotic response to circumstance.” In my career as a therapist and my personal life I have spent many years researching and experimenting with behaviours that bring about a sense of peace, joy, order and satisfaction, Do I always get it right? Absolutely not! But I have learnt a few things over these last few years that I’d love to share with you.

As women the burden of maintaining the emotional climate of our homes often falls on us. Rightly or wrongly we are the centre around which the rest of our families revolve. If we are not in a place where we feel we can cope, life begins to feel overwhelming for everyone. In taking care of ourselves and putting strategies in place to keep things on track we build up reserves to draw on when we face challenges.

Heraclitus said “The only constant is change.” In our lives we will face many transitions: from single to married, from childless to mother, from daughter to care-taker. Each of these transitions, whether longed for or feared bring about new roles, occupations and activities. How we navigate these changes defines who we are.

Personal story

My own journey into motherhood has not been a smooth one. In 2014 my first child was born with a serious medical condition which required surgery at only two days old. What followed was a series of hospital admissions, many several months long. In fact when my second little boy was born in 2016, my first was in the midst of a two month long icu stay with serious breathing complications. Throughout this experience, I was awed at the way my church, family and friends supported our little family. I became so aware of how the routines and rituals that we had built into our lives helped to support and carry us in a very challenging time. In the midst of a very difficult season, we had a wealth of resources on which to draw and this allowed us
